Latvia to fine coaches without certification, but checks only after complaints

From summer, Latvia will begin fining people who lead sports training sessions without the required qualification. Checks are planned only after complaints, and not everyone considers the requirements necessary.

Latvia will begin imposing fines from summer on people who conduct sports training sessions without the necessary qualification. The change was reported by Latvian public media LSM in its Russian-language service. It concerns coaches across the country and anyone who trains under a specialist's guidance.

Why qualification matters

The requirement is not merely a formality. The workload a coach chooses and the recommendations he or she gives can affect a person's health, so qualification has practical significance.

What already applies

A relevant qualification is already needed to lead training sessions. Coaches must also be listed in the public register of sports specialists. What is new is that failure to comply will start to be punished with fines.

Checks and attitudes

As the headline of the article indicates, checks are planned only after complaints are received. In other words, active inspections are not expected. Moreover, not everyone regards these requirements as necessary, so the question of certificates and the register remains a matter of disagreement.
