The Operetta and Musical Theatre has begun work on a new production titled 'Parisian Bohemia', which is being billed as the first eco-fashion operetta in Latvia. The premiere is scheduled for October 1, 2026, at 7:00 PM at the Culture Palace 'Ziemeļblāzma', according to information released by the theatre.
The production is inspired by Hungarian composer Imre Kálmán's operetta 'The Violet of Montmartre', first performed in Vienna in 1930. However, the new staging will be a contemporary musical theatre event, blending classical operetta, high fashion, and visual art.
Under the direction of Sonora Vaice, the world of Montmartre bohemia is portrayed through insect metaphors, with nature serving as the inspiration for the visual identity. As explained by the theatre's creative director Agija Ozoliņa-Kozlovska, 'eco' here is not just about sustainability – it is an artistic philosophy where nature is a co-creator.
The creative team includes director Sonora Vaice, conductor Atvars Lakstīgala, choreographer Ieva Kemlere, costume designer Pamela Butāne, set and multimedia designer Ineta Sipunova, technical director Ansis Gornavs, as well as soloists and other creative partners. Work is currently underway on the concept, musical interpretation, set design, choreography, and costumes.
After the premiere in Riga, the production is scheduled to tour Latvia, with performances at the Cēsis Concert Hall, VEF Culture Palace, Ventspils Theatre House 'Jūras vārti', and Liepāja Theatre. Tickets for the first shows are already available at 'Biļešu Paradīze' box offices and online. The production is co-financed by the State Culture Capital Foundation.
