Average age of mothers giving birth continues to rise in Latvia
Central Statistical Bureau data show that in 2025 the average age of mothers at childbirth in Latvia reached 30.6 years, continuing a long-term upward trend. At the same time, the number of very young mothers has dropped sharply while the share of children born in marriage has grown.
Data compiled by Latvia's Central Statistical Bureau (CSP) show that the average age of mothers at the time of childbirth continues to gradually increase. In 2025 the figure reached 30.6 years, up from 30.4 in 2024 and two years higher than the 28.6 recorded in 2010.
Most active age group
Most babies are still born to mothers aged 30 to 34 – this group accounted for 3,766 newborns in 2025, nearly a third of all births that year. The second-largest group is mothers aged 35 to 39, with 2,852 newborns, followed by mothers aged 25 to 29, with 2,766 births.
Fewer young mothers
Compared with 2010, the number of births to younger women has fallen sharply. In 2010, women under 20 gave birth to 1,152 children, while in 2025 that number was just 263. At the same time, the share of births to women over 30 has increased.
Overall birth figures
In 2025, a total of 11,931 live births were registered in Latvia. Of these, 7,669, or 64.3%, were born to married parents – a figure that has risen by 8.7 percentage points over the past 15 years.
CSP data also show that just over 40% of newborns were the first child in the family, nearly 35% were second children, and 16.4% were third children.
