Average age of mothers giving birth in Latvia keeps rising
Latvia's Central Statistical Bureau reports that the average age of mothers at childbirth reached 30.6 years in 2025, continuing a years-long upward trend, while births among younger mothers have declined sharply.
Data from Latvia's Central Statistical Bureau (CSP) show that the average age of mothers at the time of childbirth continues to rise. In 2025 it reached 30.6 years, up from 30.4 years the previous year and 28.6 years in 2010.
Most births still occur among mothers aged 30-34
The largest share of newborns is still born to mothers aged 30 to 34 — this group accounted for 3,766 births, nearly a third of all newborns last year. The second-largest group is mothers aged 35 to 39, with 2,852 births, followed by mothers aged 25 to 29, with 2,766 births.
Compared with 2010, the number of births among younger mothers has fallen sharply. In 2010, women under 20 gave birth to 1,152 children, while in 2025 that figure was just 263. At the same time, the share of women giving birth after age 30 has grown.
Overall figures and family status
A total of 11,931 live births were registered in Latvia in 2025. Of these, 7,669, or 64.3%, were born to married parents — a figure that has risen by 8.7 percentage points over the past 15 years.
CSP data also show that 40.6% of all newborns were first children in their family, 34.8% were second children, and 16.4% were third children.
