Latvia submits Viesturs Kairišs' "Ulja" for Oscar consideration
Latvia's National Film Centre has selected Viesturs Kairišs' feature film "Ulja" as the country's submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards. The film has already received recognition at A-list international festivals.

The annual selection process for candidates to the American Film Academy's Best International Feature Film category has begun, with Latvian films submitted to international competition this year under review. The national expert commission has decided to put forward the feature film "Ulja" as Latvia's entry — the latest work from director Viesturs Kairišs, which has already earned recognition at A-list international film festivals.
The lead role in the film is played by actor Kārlis Arnolds Avots. Representatives of the National Film Centre announced the decision to nominate the film as Latvia's Oscar submission.
The submission is the first step toward possible inclusion on the Academy's official shortlist for Best International Feature Film — a category in which each country may submit only one film per year.
