On Wednesday, May 29, 2025, the Latvian women's 3x3 basketball team suffered a 13-15 defeat to Sweden in the decisive qualification match held in Romania. This loss prevented them from advancing to the European Cup final tournament, scheduled for early September in Antwerp, Belgium.
The Latvian roster included Marta Leimane, Marta Miščenko, Digna Strautmane, and Ketija Vihmane. Prior to this match, the team had performed well in Group B, defeating Greece (13:10), Great Britain (18:14), and Austria (16:13), finishing first in the group.
Sweden and Ukraine Advance
Sweden had placed second in Group A with wins over Lithuania (11-9 in overtime) and Romania (12-7), a loss to Ukraine (12-16), and a dominant victory over Denmark (20-4). Ukraine had already secured a spot in the final tournament before Latvia's match, beating Austria 16-15.
Earlier, ten women's teams had already qualified: reigning champion Netherlands, host Belgium, Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic (via ranking), and Hungary, Slovenia, and Azerbaijan (qualification winners).
Men's Tournament Status
In the men's competition, Latvia already has a guaranteed spot as the World Cup winner. Other qualified men's teams include champion Lithuania, host Belgium, Serbia, France, Netherlands, Germany (ranking), as well as Italy, Ireland, and Switzerland.
The European Championship final tournament will take place from September 11 to 13 in Antwerp.
