The Latvian Army has told residents of the Latvia–Lithuania border area that planned flights of unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, will take place there from 23 to 30 October. The aircraft will be of various types and sizes. The warning was posted by the Latvian armed forces on the social network Facebook.

The army opens its message with the word "Attention!" and stresses that the flights have been planned in advance. It asks residents not to worry. In other words, drones seen in the sky during this period are not a sign of an emergency.

Link to NATO trials

The news portal NRA notes that a series of experiments and trials of new NATO defence technologies began in Latvia this week. NATO is the North Atlantic defence alliance, of which both Latvia and Lithuania are members. The portal has already reported on the testing of the latest NATO military technologies at Latvian training grounds.

The source does not say whether these trials are the reason for the border drone flights. It also gives no specific locations, flight times or number of drones. All that is known is that the flights are scheduled over an eight-day period starting on 23 October.

The army's message is aimed at people living in the Latvia–Lithuania border area. Its purpose is to head off unnecessary concern if someone sees or hears unmanned aircraft in these days.
