Latvijas Avīze, a Latvian daily newspaper, has published an interactive quiz on its website that tests knowledge of potentially dangerous plants, animals and everyday food items. It is aimed at readers who want to find out whether they can distinguish genuine threats from myths and exaggerated fears.

Examples named in the introduction

The quiz opens with a list of ordinary things and asks which of them can actually be dangerous: a toad sitting calmly in the grass, a bitter zucchini from one's own garden, bright red rowan berries, an innocent-looking daffodil, and nutmeg in a spice rack. The editors note that many myths circulate about poisonous plants and animals, but sometimes it is precisely everyday things that hide unexpected risks.

The first question

The quiz has ten questions. The first asks whether touching a toad with bare hands is dangerous for a person. Three answers are offered: yes, because toad skin secretes a poison that causes severe poisoning through human skin; usually no, but its skin secretions can irritate the eyes and mucous membranes; or yes, but only in spring.

The correct answers and explanations are available by taking the quiz on the Latvijas Avīze website.
