The Bank of Latvia on Thursday sold out its latest silver collector coin, "Kastanis" (Chestnut), which features gilded details. The central bank said demand was strong, and three hours after sales began, no coins were left on the "e-monetas.lv" website.

Sales on the website started at 12:00. The coin was priced at 147 euros at the Bank of Latvia, and each buyer could purchase no more than three coins.

Design of the coin

The obverse shows a relief of a chestnut fruit in its spiky husk, with the fruit itself gilded when seen from the front. The inscription "5 EURO" is arranged in a semicircle along the top, with the year "2026" at the bottom. The reverse shows a relief of a split chestnut husk, with part of a gilded fruit visible from behind. The word "LATVIJA" is placed diagonally at the top.

The mintage is 3,000 pieces. The graphic design is by artist Kaspars Līdums, and the coin was struck at the Lithuanian mint "Lietuvos monetu kalykla".

About collector coins

Collector coins are legal tender only in the country that issues them. In form they are money, but in essence they are works of art. They are made of gold, silver or other precious metals in exceptionally high strike quality.

Unlike circulation currency, collector coins are generally not intended for payments but for gifts, commemoration and collections. For this reason their price is considerably higher than their face value. The face value of collector coins also differs from that of circulation coins.
