Thunderstorm with heavy rain crosses central Latvia

Latvia's Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) has issued a yellow-level warning for a thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rain affecting the country's central regions. The warning took effect Monday at 12:28 and remains valid until 20:00.

During the storm, residents are advised to seek shelter in enclosed spaces, as outdoor activities may be disrupted. Extra caution is recommended for those in areas especially exposed to thunderstorm effects, such as forests and open terrain.

Possible consequences

Meteorologists warn that power outages may occur during the storm. Strong wind gusts could break tree branches and carry other loose objects or debris through the air, posing an additional hazard.

Heavy rain may cause a rapid rise in water levels, leading to flooding of low-lying areas. Drivers should expect more difficult driving conditions, including reduced visibility and the risk of hydroplaning on roads.

The thunderstorm may also bring hail, which could damage agricultural crops.

Residents are urged to monitor the storm's movement and exercise caution while the warning remains in effect.
