Support for cooperation with Canada and Ukraine
Some Latvian MEPs responded positively to von der Leyen's plans for closer cooperation with Canada. They also welcomed the expressions of support for Ukraine, which continues to fight against Russia's invasion.
Concerns over funding and security plans
Other Latvian MEPs took a more cautious stance. Their main concerns center on how funding will be secured for the new initiatives mentioned by the Commission president in her speech. They also expressed criticism of the European security policy plans outlined during the address.
The divergent assessments show that even among Latvia's own representatives in the European Parliament, there is no consensus on the right direction for the European Union's future policy on security and international cooperation.
