Latvia's economy is performing better in 2026 than economists had anticipated back in spring. This may come as a surprise, since energy prices have risen this year, and fuel has also become more expensive at filling stations — developments that are typically seen as a drag on economic growth.

Despite this, several banks have recently revised their forecasts for Latvia's economic growth upward. Compared with the assessments made in spring, banks now expect the economy to expand faster than previously thought, suggesting that overall the economy has proven more resilient to various challenges than initially estimated.

The upward revision of forecasts indicates that, despite higher spending on energy and fuel, other segments of the economy have performed well enough to produce a more positive overall result than expected. This matters both for households and for businesses, since banks also use their forecasts when making lending and investment decisions.

The question of why the economy is growing faster than expected despite pricier energy and fuel remains relevant — it points to several factors within Latvia's economy that are apparently able to offset the negative impact of higher costs.

Exactly how each bank calculates its updated figures, and how it explains the improvement, may vary, but the overall trend shows that Latvia's economy is displaying greater resilience in 2026 than seemed likely just a few months ago.
