Latvian Football Federation won't rush to pick favourite in FIFA election
The Latvian Football Federation will wait until the candidate application period ends before deciding whom to support in the FIFA presidential election in 2027. Gaidels does not think the rejection of Infantino's commercial proposal will affect FIFA funding.
The Latvian Football Federation (LFF) says it will not be rushing to endorse any candidate in the upcoming FIFA presidential election. LFF Secretary General Artūrs Gaidels said on Latvian Television on Tuesday that the federation intends to wait until the candidate application period has ended. Only after that will it consider whether to support one of the contenders.
The football body is expected to cast its vote in the election scheduled for spring 2027. At present, the list of official candidates has not been finalised, and the LFF wants to avoid selecting a favourite prematurely. The approach is meant to ensure that a decision is made with full knowledge of all individuals in the race.
Gaidels also touched on the global commercial proposal championed by current FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The LFF, alongside a number of other European football federations, turned down the proposal. In Gaidels' view, this rejection should not have any impact on the funding that FIFA has already promised.
The federation's comments highlight a cautious and deliberate strategy. Rather than reacting to early announcements, the LFF is choosing to wait for the formal conclusion of the nomination process. Once all applications are in, the federation will be in a better position to make a final decision on who to back.
