Latvia's key task in the UN Security Council: fighting Russian disinformation
Latvia has been a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for half a year, and its diplomats say the top priority is to stop the spread of Russian lies and increase support for Ukraine.
Since the beginning of 2026, Latvia has held a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. Over these six months, Latvian diplomats have identified a primary objective: preventing the dissemination of Russian propaganda and disinformation. They emphasize that Russian falsehoods and misleading information pose a serious threat to international security and peace.
Latvian representatives are actively working to convince more countries to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. Diplomats stress that without strong international unity, it is difficult to achieve long-term solutions. Latvia uses its platform in the Security Council to expose Russian manipulations and promote the spread of truthful information.
This work is particularly important given Russia's efforts to shape global perceptions of the war in Ukraine. Latvia's diplomatic mission aims to ensure that other nations not only understand the danger of Russian propaganda but also take active steps to counter it.
