Alberts Šmits has etched his name in Latvian hockey history as the highest-ever drafted player from the country. The NHL doors also opened this year for Rūdolfs Bērzkalns, Olivers Mūrnieks, and Patriks Plūmiņš, but Šmits’ achievement stands out.

Interestingly, months before the draft, Latvian national team leaders Rūdolfs Balcers, Kristers Gudļevskis, and Kaspars Daugaviņš clearly stated in a Delfi TV program that Šmits is not just a big name but a player with real NHL potential. Their predictions now seem almost prophetic.

Balcers described Šmits as "calm, very calm" and noted that he observes a lot and listens more than he talks, calling him "an interesting character." This description aligns with Šmits’ on-ice performance, where he demonstrates composure and calculation.
