Latvian girls win bronze in relay at European Youth Orienteering Championship

The Latvian W16 relay team won bronze at the European Youth Orienteering Championship in Nova Gorica, Slovenia, the best result for Latvian girls since 2009.

The European Youth Orienteering Championship concluded on June 27 in Nova Gorica, Slovenia, with 437 athletes from 34 countries competing.

In the W16 relay, the Latvian team of Madlēna Freimane, Amanta Mikijanska, and Melānija Rožukalne secured the bronze medal. Freimane finished the first leg in sixth, but Mikijanska dropped to ninth in the second leg. Rožukalne ran the third fastest leg in the final stage, lifting the team to third place. Croatia won gold, Czech Republic silver. This is the best Latvian girls' relay result since 2009 when they won silver.

In the M18 relay, the Latvian trio (Lars Anders Luiks, Gustavs Ločmelis, Gustavs Millers) placed 10th. The W18 team (Elīza Eisaka, Elma Bremze, Lilija Brice) finished 14th. The M16 team (Jēkabs Graudums, Teodors Rebinovs, Miks Graudums) came 20th. In the mixed relay, Kristofers Kančs, Kristaps Krūmiņš, and Emīlija Terentjeva placed 7th.

In the long distance held the previous day, top Latvian results included Gustavs Ločmelis (13th, M18), Elīza Eisaka (15th, W18), and Miks Graudums (19th, M16). Next week, the World Junior Orienteering Championships (JWOC) begin in Sweden, with nine Latvian athletes competing.
