The Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK) has issued a strong condemnation of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to lift the suspension of Russian athletes, allowing them to compete in Olympic Games again. LOK argues that this move is a dangerous signal that could normalize aggression and violation of international law.

The IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee in October 2023 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. However, the IOC recently announced that the suspension is no longer in effect, and Russian athletes can participate if they meet anti-doping requirements. This means that even supporters of the aggression could potentially compete in the Olympics.

LOK stated that while Russia has been forced to exclude occupied territories from its scope, which is a positive step, the overall lifting of restrictions is unacceptable. LOK urges international sports federations to take responsibility and create mechanisms to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing. LOK also highlighted that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has not yet reinstated the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA), implying that doping issues remain unresolved.

LOK reaffirmed its commitment to Olympic values and solidarity with Ukraine and the Baltic states. The committee will continue to coordinate with other national Olympic committees to oppose the IOC's decision.
