Latvian beach volleyball duo Marta Ozoliņa and Marta Vildere secured a shared fifth place at the BPT 'Futures' tournament in Cape Verde on Sunday. Seeded seventh in the event, the Latvian pair won their group match against the local team but lost to the Dutch pair, advancing to the knockout stage.
In the first knockout round, Ozoliņa and Vildere crushed the home team Siozani and Keila da Cruz (seeded 11th) with a dominant 2-0 (21:8, 21:5). The second round saw them face the fifth-seeded Spanish pair Nazareth Balbuena and Carolina Fernandez. The Latvians took the first set 21:17, but the Spaniards fought back to win the second 21:18. The decisive third set was tightly contested, with the Spanish duo eventually prevailing 17:15, handing the Latvians a 1-2 defeat.
For their performance, Ozoliņa and Vildere earned 240 world ranking points. It is worth noting that the BPT (Pro Beach Tour) ranking features Elite 16 events as the highest tier, followed by Challenge tournaments, with Futures being the third-level competition.
