Latvian Radio Choir opens concert season with peace-themed program

The Latvian Radio Choir has begun its new concert season shortly after earning recognition at one of Europe's most significant theatre and culture events, the Ruhrtriennale. There, the choir took part in the world premiere of the musical performance "Sidharta," which received acclaim.

A program centered on peace

For the season's opening concert, the choir's artistic director and conductor Sigvards Kļava assembled a program featuring works by several renowned composers. Audiences heard pieces by Georgian composer Giya Kancheli, Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki, and Latvian composer Maija Einfelde, among others.

The conductor deliberately chose these works for their thematic connection to peace and the search for it. The idea was to give listeners a brief respite from everyday concerns and offer comfort through music that speaks to the longing for peace in the world.

International recognition for the choir

The choir's participation in the Ruhrtriennale underscores its strong international standing. The triennial is one of Europe's most important interdisciplinary art events, showcasing new, experimental works in theatre, music, and visual art. The world premiere of "Sidharta," in which the ensemble took part, was well received.

With this concert, the Latvian Radio Choir continues its tradition of offering audiences both contemporary and classical choral works, combining high artistic standards with themes relevant to society today.
