Dainis Upelnieks, a Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) shooter from Iecava, has won the gold medal at the 56th World Championship of the International Military Sports Council (CISM) in clay target shooting. In the final of the skeet discipline he hit all 36 targets, matching the world record and setting a new CISM record. The result was reported by the NBS Sports Club. Upelnieks holds the rank of senior national guardsman.

Qualification

Upelnieks was already strong in qualification, hitting 123 of 125 targets. To determine his place in the final, he had to take part in a shoot-off against a Chinese competitor. After it, the Latvian advanced to the final with the second-best result.

Final

In the final Upelnieks made no mistakes and hit all 36 targets, which made him world champion. The score equals the world record and improves on the previous CISM record.

Second success this month

The world title is already Upelnieks' second significant achievement in October. At the start of the month he became European champion in the solo clay target shooting event in Greece. On the way to that title he beat competitors from Ireland, Greece and Georgia, won the semifinal 6:0 against Marat Nezhdanov, and defeated Denmark's Jesper Hansen 7:3 in the final.
