At the International Chemistry Olympiad, held from July 10 to 19, Latvia's student team secured a commendable haul of four medals. The event saw 363 competitors from 92 nations.

A silver medal was awarded to Pēteris Imants Mežciems from Riga State Gymnasium No.1. Bronze medals were earned by his schoolmates Kārlis Zalāns and Sofija Kleina, along with Bruno Kančs representing RTU Engineering High School.

According to the State Education Development Agency (VIAA), this year's theoretical tasks ranked among the most difficult of the past decade. Participants tackled problems spanning various branches of chemistry. The practical session lasted five hours, requiring students to identify unknown acid mixtures, analyze enzyme reactions, and synthesize a metal complex.
