Latvian road cyclists finish ninth in UCI Gran Fondo World Championship relay
Latvia's amateur cycling team made its first-ever appearance in the UCI Gran Fondo World Championship team relay in Japan, finishing ninth among 26 nations.
On Friday in Japan, the UCI Gran Fondo World Championship held its road cycling team relay event, featuring Latvian amateur cyclists for the first time in history. The country was represented by Ģirts Vēvers, Aleksandrs Zavoloks, Anita Antone and Dzintars Ausmanis, who finished ninth out of 26 competing national teams.
How the race worked
Each team consisted of four athletes, and each rider had to complete three technically demanding 1.9-kilometer laps. Rider changeovers took place in a specially built exchange zone, occurring once the previous team member had crossed the finish line. Several teams, including initial winners Japan, were disqualified for violations in the exchange zone. Latvia's team had no issues with rule compliance.
Latvia's race progression
Aleksandrs Zavoloks started first for Latvia, tasked with securing a position among the leading group. He was followed by Anita Antone, then Ģirts Vēvers, and finally Dzintars Ausmanis, recognized as the team's strongest sprinter. The race split into several smaller groups, with the Latvian athletes maintaining a place among the top ten throughout. The toughest test came at a 500-meter climb, where teams could either improve or lose their standing.
Latvia ultimately placed ninth. Poland won the event, finishing 50 seconds ahead of the Latvian team. France took second place, with Canada placing third. On Sunday, the Latvian cyclists are set to compete in the individual road race.
