Latvia's U-16 teams claim victories at Baltic Cup on Saturday
Latvia's U-16 boys' basketball team beat Lithuania 80:71 in Riga on Saturday, while the girls' team also secured a win over Lithuania. Both teams continue their Baltic Cup campaigns on Sunday.
Riga hosted more Baltic Cup matches for U-16 basketball teams on Saturday. Latvia's boys' squad picked up their second consecutive win in the tournament by defeating Lithuania 80:71. The visitors led 14:12 after the opening quarter, but Latvia responded strongly in the second period, outscoring Lithuania 31:20 to take control. Although Lithuania narrowed the gap in the third quarter, Latvia held on in the final frame.
Team captain Benjamin Janis Berue was the standout performer for the hosts, recording 24 points, ten rebounds, three blocked shots and nine drawn fouls. He made eight of 12 two-point attempts and eight of ten free throws. Markus Jahovics added 12 points.
For Lithuania, Danelius Jasikevicius scored 14 points, Kostas Korsakovs contributed 13 points and seven rebounds, and Lukas Andrulis posted ten points and ten rebounds.
The Latvian boys had opened their Baltic Cup campaign on Friday with a 95:86 victory over Estonia. In the girls' competition, Latvia's cadette team earned their second win, beating Lithuania 66:51 after previously defeating Estonia 64:49 on Friday.
Sunday's schedule at the Team Sports Hall sees Latvia's girls face Ukraine at 4 p.m., while Latvia and Spain meet in the boys' competition at 6.30 p.m. The boys' tournament features Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Spain, while the girls' tournament includes Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Ukraine.
