Latvia's U-23 women's 3x3 basketball national team suffered a semifinal defeat at the World Cup on Saturday. The squad, featuring Enija Ķīvīte, Marta Leimane, Ieva Korzāne and Adelīna Urtāne, lost 8:21 to Canada, which was seeded 18th in the tournament.

Latvia entered the tournament seeded sixth. Before the semifinal loss, the Latvian team had beaten France (seeded 8th) 21:15 in the quarterfinal.

Following the semifinal defeat, the Latvian women will now play for the bronze medal.

Men's team also in semifinal action

On the same day, at 14:05, Latvia's men's 3x3 basketball team was set to play its own semifinal against Australia.

Both the women's and men's tournaments feature 20 national teams each, divided into four groups. The top two teams from each group advanced to the quarterfinals, with the knockout games and medal matches taking place on Saturday.

Historical context

Latvia's U-23 basketball teams have reached the podium at the U-23 World Cup only once before — at the inaugural tournament in 2018, when the men's team won silver. Last year, Lithuania's men's team became U-23 champions, while the Netherlands' women's team took the title.
