Latvian U18 handballers defeat Estonia twice in friendlies
Latvia's U18 men's handball team won both friendly matches against Estonia ahead of the European Championship B Division in North Macedonia.
The Latvian U18 handball team, led by head coach Rihards Leja, completed a successful friendly cycle with two victories over their Estonian counterparts. Both matches were held in Riga at the ASK sports hall.
In the first game, after a balanced first half (12:12), Latvia took control in the second half and won 27:21. Markus Ikvils was named MVP, scoring 8 goals from 14 attempts.
In the second match, Latvia dominated from the start, leading 20:12 at halftime and winning 37:27. Justs Vidzis was the standout player, converting 8 of 11 shots.
These friendlies were the final preparation before the European U18 Championship B Division tournament in North Macedonia, scheduled from August 3 to 9. The team will continue training in Riga until August 2, when they depart for the tournament.
Coach Rihards Leja noted that the wins bring positive emotions but also highlighted several areas for improvement. He criticized the quality of the first match, citing many misunderstandings in offense and defense. Leja praised the goalkeepers for repeatedly saving the team and preventing defensive mistakes from affecting the score.
Unfortunately, injuries occurred during the friendlies. Edvards Toks aggravated a micro-injury, while Krists Barutis sustained a potentially serious injury that may prevent him from participating in the European Championship. Further medical examinations will determine his condition.
In the European Championship group stage, Latvia will face Romania, Ukraine, and Lithuania.
