Latvian U18 Volleyball Team Keeps Hope Alive Despite Loss to Italy
Latvia's U18 women's volleyball team lost 0-3 to tournament favorites Italy in Riga, but their competitive performance in the first set and growing confidence give them hope for upcoming matches against Czech Republic and Belgium.

The Latvian U18 women's volleyball team faced Italy, one of the tournament favorites, on Sunday at the European Championship in Riga, losing 0-3 (18:25, 11:25, 16:25). Despite the defeat, the team showed fighting spirit, especially in the first set, and remains optimistic about the remaining matches.
Similar to their previous game against Turkey, Latvia started strong and even led 12-10 in the first set after a precise spike from Adriana Bukovska. However, Italy regained control and won the set comfortably. In the second and third sets, Italy dominated, using their height advantage and strong blocking, scoring 16 block points throughout the match.
Captain Linda Račiņa was Latvia's top scorer with 11 points, while Adriana Bukovska added six. Libero Loreta Arhipova was named the best player of the match. After the game, Arhipova said the team was well-prepared and proud of their performance against such strong opponents. She noted that Italy has the best blockers in the tournament, but Latvia managed to disrupt their rhythm, especially in the first set.
Italian specialist Daniele Mario Capriotti, who coaches Latvia's senior women's team and serves as the federation's sports director, praised Latvia's effort. He commented that Italy was not satisfied with their play despite the win, and Latvia's fighting spirit made the opponents nervous.
With one win, Latvia currently sits seventh in the Riga group. They have two more matches: against the Czech Republic on July 8 and Belgium on July 9. The team hopes to compete for victories in these games against more evenly matched opponents and keep alive their chances of finishing third, which would qualify them for next year's U19 World Championship. In the Riga group, Turkey and Italy lead with five wins each, followed by Spain and Poland.
