Portugal has requested international assistance to control large wildfires that have been raging across forests and scrubland this month. In response, Latvia has deployed 20 firefighters to support the local firefighting efforts. The Latvian crew, already engaged in fire suppression, reports that adapting to the intense heat in Portugal is particularly difficult. The operation is further complicated by strong winds and the rugged, mountainous landscape. Wildfires are common in the region during summer, but this year's blazes have been especially severe, affecting not only Portugal but also France and Spain. The Latvian firefighters will work alongside Portuguese authorities until the situation is brought under control.
