Latvian firefighters help extinguish forest fires in Portugal
Twenty Latvian firefighters have been deployed to Portugal to assist in combating large-scale forest fires that are raging across the country.

International Assistance
Portugal is currently experiencing massive forest fires, prompting a request for international aid. This month, a team of 20 Latvian firefighters and rescuers was dispatched to help their Portuguese colleagues.
Challenges on the Ground
Latvian firefighters admit that the most difficult part has been adapting to the extreme heat that prevails in Portugal. The firefighting efforts are further complicated by strong winds and mountainous terrain, which hinder containment and increase the risk of rapid fire spread. These conditions require special skills and endurance.
Regional Fire Season
Portugal is among several European countries facing severe wildfires this summer. Similar blazes have also been reported in France and Spain, but Portugal specifically sought external assistance to manage the crisis.
