Latvian scientists head to Greenland to study glaciers
A four-member team of geologists from the University of Latvia has traveled to Greenland to examine the Kanaka ice domes. The research aims to improve forecasts of global sea level rise.

Scientists from the University of Latvia have set out on an expedition to Greenland, the world's largest island. The four-strong geology team will study the Kanaka ice domes in the island's northwest, continuing earlier research into glacier behavior and its implications for future sea level projections.
Greenland holds the largest ice mass in the Northern Hemisphere. If this ice were to melt entirely, global sea levels would rise by about seven meters. That makes accurate data on glacier conditions important for scientists worldwide.
Currently, most information about glaciers comes from satellite observations, which allow researchers to monitor vast areas from a distance. However, those remote measurements do not always match what scientists encounter on the ground. Expedition findings have sometimes revealed significant differences from satellite data, underscoring the continuing need for field research.
By collecting direct observations from the Kanaka ice domes, the Latvian team hopes to help refine the models used to predict how melting ice will affect oceans and coastal communities. Their work in Greenland contributes to broader international efforts to understand ice dynamics and the global consequences of climate change.
