Latvia's women's national volleyball team departed for Istanbul the day before the opening of the European Championship, which kicks off on Friday, 21 August. The tournament marks a significant occasion for Latvian volleyball, as the national team has not appeared in the final stage of the competition for nearly three decades.

This year's European Championship is being held across four countries simultaneously — matches will take place in Turkey, Czechia, Azerbaijan and Sweden.

Before departure, national team player and setter Elza Reknere spoke to Latvian Television about the squad's main goals for the upcoming tournament. She noted that taking part in a competition of this scale brings added value to the team and to each player, regardless of the specific result achieved.

Latvia's return to the European Championship final tournament after such a long absence is seen as an important step forward for the country's volleyball development.
