Latvia's women's volleyball team suffered a 2-3 (25:18, 25:21, 22:25, 14:25, 16:18) defeat against Estonia in Tallinn on Friday in their fifth match of the CEV European League. Much like their first match against Romania, the Latvians won the opening two sets but could not maintain the advantage. In the decisive fifth set, Latvia rallied to take a 14-13 lead, but missed two match points, allowing Estonia to clinch a 16-18 victory.
Marta Kamēlija Levinska was the top scorer for Latvia with 20 points, while Anija Jurdža added 14. For Estonia, Kertu Lāka scored 18 points. This was the second meeting between the teams this year; in May, Latvia won both friendly matches in Riga, in four and three sets respectively.
Previously, Latvia had lost 2-3 to Romania and 0-3 to Israel, then beat Iceland 3-0 and lost 0-3 to Slovenia in Ljubljana. Estonia had lost 0-3 to both Sweden and Azerbaijan in Baku, and later 0-3 to Hungary and Croatia in Kecskemét. Latvia will face Greece on Saturday.
Following a restructuring, the European League also serves as part of qualification for the 2028 European Championship finals. Each team has three rounds, after which the top four advance to the final round. Both Latvian national teams will compete in this year's European Championship finals.
