Latvia's volleyball team falls to Poland at European Championship, coach cites experience gained

Latvia's men's national volleyball team was eliminated from the European Championship on Saturday, losing to world-ranked leader Poland in the round of 16. Head coach Uģis Krastiņš said afterward that the team had gained valuable experience during the tournament, which should help motivate the squad's young core to keep developing.

Blocking proved the toughest challenge

While pre-match concerns centered on handling Poland's powerful serves, the bigger problem turned out to be Poland's blocking. The Polish side recorded 14 scoring blocks, six from Tomasz Fornal and four from Bartłomiej Lemański. Latvia's top scorer, Kristers Landzāns, who finished with 11 points, said reception went fairly well but attacking against such a disciplined, high block was difficult. Landzāns began the match on the bench but replaced starting opposite Renārs Pauls Jansons after just a few rallies.

Forced substitutions

Captain Kristaps Šmits also did not return to the court after the first set. Krastiņš explained that both substitutions were forced by circumstances, noting that both Jansons and Šmits would have wanted to continue playing. Besides Landzāns, Latvia's scorers included Jānis Medenis, Gustavs Freimanis, Eduards Dūdens, Armands Rokjāns, Kristaps Šmits and Edvīns Skrūders.

The coach highlighted the start of the second set as a positive moment, when Latvia briefly took a small lead and stayed close to Poland for an extended stretch, though it ultimately could not hold on. Krastiņš stressed the importance of facing top-level teams more often to reduce the nerves such matches bring and to find ways of playing against such a high block.

Overall, Krastiņš gave the tournament a strongly positive assessment, saying the team improved significantly from its opening match to its last. Latvia's final tournament ranking will be determined once all round-of-16 matches conclude. Five years ago, Latvia also reached the round of 16 and finished 16th, while at the 1995 European Championship the team placed 11th.
