Latvia's volleyball team falls to favorites Ukraine in Tallinn but earns respect with fighting display

Latvia's men's national volleyball team opened a test tournament in Tallinn on Thursday with a 1-3 set loss (18:25, 25:22, 18:25, 23:25) to Ukraine, this season's FIVB Nations League quarterfinalist and the tournament's favorite.

From the start, Ukraine tried to dictate play with powerful serving, and largely succeeded. Still, the Latvian team, led by head coach Uģis Krastiņš, repeatedly found bursts of good form. Latvia could not overcome an early five-point deficit in the first set, but in the second set, precise serving from Renārs Pauls Jansons helped the Latvians seize the initiative and take the set. Ukraine quickly built a lead in the third set and held on, while the fourth set again became tight — a strong serving run from captain Kristaps Šmits leveled things out, but Ukraine proved sharper in the decisive moments.

Krastiņš, who spent seven years previously coaching Ukraine's national team, said his side could take more satisfaction from the quality of play than from the result. He noted that in the fourth set's closing stretch, the team lacked a decisive "killer instinct," missing at least three break-point chances. He credited the team's strong reception of Ukraine's powerful serves — with only one clean reception error — as key to staying competitive. Libero Kaspars Kronbergs echoed this, noting he had to handle serves from Ukraine's Italy-based leader Oleh Plotnytskyi, among the toughest he has faced.

Jansons and Šmits each scored 16 points for Latvia, with Šmits attacking at 52% efficiency. Plotnytskyi led Ukraine with 18 points.

Latvia continues the tournament on Friday against hosts Estonia, followed by a match against Slovakia on Saturday. Both matches in Tallinn start at 16:00.
