Latvian scientists create Styrofoam alternative from fungal mycelium

Latvian researchers have developed a biodegradable material from fungal mycelium and wood processing residues that could replace Styrofoam in packaging. The development was announced by a representative of the Latvian Mycological Society.

Scientists in Latvia have developed a new, biodegradable material that could serve as a future alternative to conventional Styrofoam. The material is made from two base components — fungal mycelium, the root-like structure of fungi, and leftover residues from wood processing.

The development was revealed by Evita Veinberga, a board member of the Latvian Mycological Society, during an appearance on the podcast "Kas tas vispār bija?!" ("What Was That Anyway?!"). She explained that combining mycelium with wood processing byproducts has resulted in a material that could potentially be used in the packaging industry in place of Styrofoam.

A biodegradable solution

The main advantage of such a material is its ability to break down naturally, unlike Styrofoam, which is notoriously difficult to recycle and persists in the environment for a long time. Mycelium-based materials have been studied internationally for several years as a more environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic packaging materials, and Latvian scientists have now developed a similar solution.
