Powerful summer storm to hit Latvia with heavy rain and strong winds
An unusually powerful cyclone will cross Latvia from Saturday into Sunday, bringing intense rainfall and wind gusts of up to 32 meters per second. Meteorologists warn of possible fallen trees and infrastructure damage.

Meteorologists are warning of an unusually powerful cyclone that will cross Latvia on Saturday and into the night before Sunday, bringing both heavy rainfall and strong winds. Such intensity is uncommon for the summer season.
Rain to begin from the south
Precipitation will start on Saturday morning in the southern part of the country. In the Kurzeme, Zemgale and Vidzeme regions, rainfall could reach 30 to 80 millimeters, with thunderstorms possible in some areas, potentially causing flooding in low-lying spots. Latgale is expected to see comparatively less rain.
Wind gusts could exceed 30 meters per second
On Saturday evening and into the night before Sunday, wind gusts across most of the country will reach 20 to 27 meters per second. Even stronger winds are expected along the Vidzeme coast, including Riga, where gusts could reach up to 32 meters per second. Winds of this strength can break and uproot trees, cause other damage, and threaten coastal infrastructure.
Conditions to persist into Sunday
Gusty winds and rain will continue on Sunday, though conditions are expected to gradually improve. The wind is forecast to die down only on Monday. Meteorologists note that the exact forecast may still change, so residents are advised to follow the latest weather updates and plan their activities accordingly.
