Farmer builds a cheap warming box for newborn calves himself

A German farmer used wooden boards, wheels and an ordinary hair dryer to make a box that dries and warms newborn calves and doubles as a transport crate. Experts stress it should be used selectively and that colostrum matters more.

A German farmer, whose solution is described by the agricultural portal agrarheute, has built a simple and inexpensive warming box for newborn calves. Calves are born wet and lose heat quickly, so the box helps dry and warm them after birth.

How the box works

The structure is made of wooden boards. An ordinary hair dryer supplies the heat, blowing warm air through an opening in the top of the box, so a wet calf dries faster. Lifting eyes on the underside let a stable tractor pick up the whole box, so it can also be used to transport a calf. Wheels make it easier to move by hand in the barn.

One side of the box stays open. While the calf dries, the farmer places that side against a wall to reduce exposure to drafts. Once the calf is dry and stable, it gets a calf blanket and is moved to its individual pen.

When a calf needs extra warmth

The Bavarian State Research Center for Agriculture (LfL) notes that calves are born wet with very small energy reserves. Heat is also lost as amniotic fluid evaporates from the coat, and young calves lose heat faster than older animals. Healthy calves can be born with a body temperature of up to 39.5 °C, which naturally falls during the first hours.

The University of Nebraska in the US gives a normal rectal temperature for newborn calves of roughly 38.6 to 39.2 °C. If it drops below about 38.3 °C, steps should be taken to prevent further chilling. Wet, weak or inactive calves, and those born after a difficult or long calving, are especially at risk.

Colostrum and hygiene

The box alone is not enough. Early and sufficient feeding of high-quality colostrum is decisive, as it provides both antibodies and energy for maintaining body temperature. The calf should be monitored while warming so it does not overheat. After use, the box should be cleaned and disinfected, since pathogens can multiply in warmth as well.
