As summer fades into autumn, many look for ways to leave behind stress and welcome a calmer season. One practice associated with this transition is burning bay leaves at home — a ritual said to originate in Eastern philosophy.

Why September matters

September marks the shift from hot summer days to quieter autumn moods, making it, according to the tradition, a suitable time for energetic cleansing. Historically, burning bay leaves was used to clear negative energy from living spaces, with the fragrant smoke believed to make a home's atmosphere more harmonious and lighter.

In ancient Greece and Rome, the bay leaf symbolized wisdom and good fortune, and its presence at home was linked to overcoming psychological barriers and sparking new ideas. The scent of bay leaves is said to have a calming effect that can support focus and creativity.

How the ritual is performed

The ritual calls for dried bay leaves, a source of fire, and a dish to burn the leaf in. It is recommended to find a quiet, undisturbed spot, hold the leaf, and focus on what one wishes to release — such as worries or doubts.

Once lit, the leaf is left to smolder slowly while the person repeats personal goals or positive affirmations. The smoke can be directed toward corners of a room that feel heavy or gloomy. The ritual ends either by letting the leaf burn out completely or carefully extinguishing it.

As emphasized in the tradition, the ritual's power lies not in the act of burning itself but in the clear intention behind it — that intention is what is said to shift one's emotional state.
