Lavrov: Russia ready to return to Anchorage 'agreement'

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a press conference following the UN General Assembly's high-level week that Russia believes an agreement was reached in Anchorage, Alaska in August 2025 between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, and that Moscow is ready to return to it. The statement was reported by the Russian state agency TASS.

Lavrov said Russia does not suffer from a "lack of trust" and is allegedly ready to continue negotiations on a Ukraine settlement, but stressed that agreements reached must be implemented. He also claimed European countries are preparing for war with Russia, alleging that "metastases of Nazism" are visible among EU and NATO member states, including Germany.

Background

On September 15, Lavrov had already said Russia would have lived without war for a year already had the United States not backed away from the agreements reached in Alaska in August 2025.

Trump and Putin met at a military base in Anchorage on August 15, 2025, but the meeting ended without any agreement or ceasefire announcement for Ukraine. According to Bloomberg, in a subsequent call with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump said Putin continues to demand a full withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the entire Donetsk and Luhansk regions, while being willing to freeze the front line in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.

On June 15 this year, Lavrov said Russia was expecting a new visit from US presidential special envoys and wanted to hear how America intends to implement the Anchorage agreements between Putin and Trump on ending the war against Ukraine. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio subsequently told reporters that no agreements on Ukraine had been reached at last year's summit between Trump and Putin, later adding that the approach proposed by the Russians in Anchorage had failed because it was unacceptable to Ukraine.
