LeBron James Officially Joins Philadelphia 76ers – The Final Chapter Begins
The Philadelphia 76ers have confirmed LeBron James' arrival with a two-year, $8 million contract, with the 41-year-old calling this move his last career decision.
On Monday, July 28, the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) officially announced LeBron James' addition to the roster. The contract is for two seasons at a total of $8 million. In the team's locker room, a crown was placed next to James' No. 23 jersey, symbolically honoring his nickname "King."
"LeBron is undoubtedly one of the greatest basketball players of all time, and it is impossible to put into words the impact he will have on our organization," said 76ers president Mike Gensii. James had previously indicated on social media that this is his final decision in his career, admitting he seriously considered retiring.
"I believe I can help the 76ers become NBA champions. I look forward to the opportunity to delight a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time," James noted. On Monday morning, he already posted a video from practice, showing his readiness for the new season.
In Philadelphia, James will join stars such as Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and Vee Seecombe. Last season, the 76ers won 45 games but lost in the second round to eventual champion New York Knicks. The club hasn't won an NBA title since 1983.
James is a four-time NBA champion, four-time league MVP, 22-time All-Star, and the all-time leading scorer in NBA history. Last season, he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game.
Also notable is James' reunion with Gensii, who has known him since high school in Ohio. In 2001, Gensii competed for the state's best high school basketball player award but lost to James. "He has always been a true professional, an excellent leader, and a tireless workaholic. But more importantly, he is a great person, a family man, and a role model for those around him," Gensii emphasized.
