Leicester City thrash Fulham U21 6-1 in EFL Trophy opener

Leicester City delivered a dominant 6-1 victory over Fulham United's U21 side at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday evening, in their opening group-stage match of the EFL Trophy, also known as the Jersey Mike's Trophy. It marked only the second time in the club's history that it has taken part in the competition.

Bristric's hat-trick and Watson's brace

Summer signing Admir Bristric was the standout performer, scoring three goals inside 19 minutes in the first half — his first for the club. According to the Leicester Mercury, Bristric opened the scoring with a low drive, then converted a tap-in from Bobby De Cordova-Reid's unselfish pass, before completing his hat-trick following a well-worked move started by Will Alves. Fellow summer arrival Tommy Watson then added two goals of his own — a curling effort from outside the box followed by a close-range finish, making it 5-0. Fulham U21 pulled one back in first-half stoppage time through Seth Chingwaro after a mistake from Warren O'Hora, who played the ball straight to the forward. Early in the second half, Bobby De Cordova-Reid completed the scoring at 6-1, also finishing the match with three assists.

Weakened squad and senior debuts

Ahead of the fixture, Leicester manager Russell Martin had said the club would be missing up to 10 players due to the upcoming international break. Martin stressed the importance of winning the match following a frustrating 1-1 draw at Barnsley, in which Leicester surrendered a lead in the second half despite the opponents playing with ten men. Academy graduates Bade Aluko, Sammy Braybrooke, Will Alves and Luke Thomas started the match, while Martin also handed senior debuts to substitutes Lorenz Hutchinson, Tommy Neale and Will Lawrence.

According to figures compiled by the BBC, Leicester dominated most statistical categories, with 65.1% possession compared to Fulham's 34.9%, 35 shots to Fulham's 10 (11 on target to 4), and 11 corners to Fulham's one.
