Leicester Tigers beat Bristol Bears 22-16 away from home in the Premiership, England's top-flight rugby union league, and took maximum points to move to the top of the table. It was the final game of the first block of league fixtures, played before the rest of the weekend's matches. Gloucester had previously led the standings, but they still have to play Northampton on Saturday.

How the game unfolded

Before the autumn international break, both teams had won three matches. The hosts scored first: Wales wing Louis Rees-Zammit side-stepped and skipped out of tackles to score his fifth Premiership try of the season. Leicester replied with a corner try from Freddie Steward, who was making his 100th Premiership start.

In the middle of the half, Bristol's indiscipline left them down to 13 players, as Matias Moroni and Tom Jordan were sent to the sin bin within three minutes for high tackles. Leicester exploited the extra space, and Adam Radwan added a second try. After the break, Ollie Hassell-Collins stretched the lead to 17-7.

James Williams kicked two penalties to cut the gap, but Jamie Blamire scored Leicester's fourth try from a driving maul, securing the bonus point. Leicester's Billy Searle missed three conversions, so the margin was smaller than it could have been. Williams landed a third penalty with seven minutes left to bring Bristol within six points, but Leicester held on.

Coaches' reaction

Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam said his side could not apply enough pressure and lost momentum at the lineout. He noted that two tries were conceded while down to 13 men. Leicester head coach Geoff Parling called it a gritty win, stressing that the team had played three games in 12 days and had 10 players away at the start of the week.
