Leicestershire on brink of relegation after 27-point deduction

Leicestershire County Cricket Club is close to relegation from Division One of the County Championship after an independent disciplinary panel deducted 27 points from their tally over a pitch regulation breach.

The penalty relates to their 42-run victory over Glamorgan in August. As part of the sanction, the club lost all 19 points earned from that win, received an additional eight-point penalty, and was fined £5,000. A further eight-point deduction was suspended for one year.

The Cricket Discipline Panel announced its decision midway through the penultimate match of the season, dropping Leicestershire to the bottom of the table. The club can appeal the ruling within 10 working days. In a statement, Leicestershire said it was reviewing its position and considering its available options after noting the panel's decision.

The Foxes' fate now hinges on their ongoing match against Hampshire at Uptonsteel Grace Road — if they fail to win, their relegation to Division Two will be confirmed. Their prospects look difficult after Hampshire ended the second day on 255-3 in their second innings, holding a 225-run lead.

Concerns about the pitch used against Glamorgan emerged immediately after that match, prompting match officials to request an inspection by the ECB's pitch and grounds advisor. Glamorgan's head coach described conditions as tough for batters, while Leicestershire's head coach acknowledged the surface was drier than intended, though prepared using the same method as the pitch for their June win over Yorkshire.

Leicestershire returned to Division One this season after a 22-year absence, having won promotion as Division Two champions. Before beating Glamorgan, they had managed only one win since returning to the top flight.
