Leicestershire get partial points reprieve but Division One fate still unclear
Leicestershire have had eight of their 27 deducted County Championship points reinstated, but their Division One survival remains uncertain as they continue to appeal the ruling.
Leicestershire County Cricket Club have had eight points restored from a 27-point County Championship deduction, though the club's status in Division One remains undecided pending an ongoing appeal.
The original penalty, announced on 16 September, related to a breach of pitch regulations tied to Leicestershire's August win over Glamorgan. The Cricket Regulator later raised a question with the Cricket Discipline Panel (CDP) over whether a separate 19-point deduction, imposed under the County Championship's playing conditions, had properly been factored into the original sanction.
Under those playing conditions, a team charged with producing a pitch rated poor or below average, with the charge upheld, forfeits all points from that match. That rule saw Leicestershire lose 19 points from the Glamorgan game — 16 for the win plus three bonus points — a deduction that remains under separate appeal.
The CDP had additionally imposed an immediate eight-point deduction, a further suspended eight-point penalty for one year, and a £5,000 fine. The suspended penalty and fine remain unchanged, but the immediate eight-point deduction for this season has now been waived.
Had none of the 27 points been deducted, Leicestershire would have finished two points clear of relegation. With the eight points reinstated but the 19-point penalty still standing, the Foxes sit 17 points behind Essex and face relegation if their appeal fails.
Chief executive Emma White said the club's position remains unchanged, noting the panel made clear the latest hearing addressed only the sanction, not an appeal of the underlying charge. Leicestershire intend to continue appealing, focusing on the process and evidence behind the original decision.
The panel noted that the original hearing bundle had made no reference to the relevant playing condition, and said its clear view was that eight points was the appropriate sanction, though it lacked power to alter the separate 19-point deduction.
Both the Cricket Regulator and Leicestershire said they would not comment further while the appeal is ongoing.
