Leigh clinch top-six spot as St Helens' play-off run ends in heavy defeat

Leigh Leopards secured a fourth consecutive Super League play-off appearance with a commanding 48-10 win over St Helens, a result that confirms Saints will miss the play-offs for the first time since the Super League era began.

Leigh dominated the first half, building a 24-10 lead through tries from Josh Charnley, David Armstrong, Umyla Hanley and Adam Cook, while St Helens replied through Jacob Douglas and Tristan Sailor.

The contest swung further Leigh's way after the break when Saints' Mark Percival was sin-binned for a high tackle. Leigh capitalised, adding tries from Edwin Ipape, a second from Hanley, plus scores from Jacob Alick-Wiencke and Robbie Mulhern, who crossed with the game's final play.

The victory keeps Leigh fifth in the standings, with a chance to climb above Wakefield into fourth place after the season's final round of fixtures.

Leigh head coach Adrian Lam said the team wanted to bounce back after a disappointing previous week and praised Charnley's continued form and importance to the club. During the match, it was announced that Charnley had signed a new contract keeping him at Leigh through the 2027 season.

St Helens interim head coach Eamon O'Carroll said the scoreline did not reflect his players' effort, adding he was proud of the squad's commitment and pleased younger players had been given the opportunity to gain experience, six weeks into his tenure in the role.
