The author, who wishes to remain anonymous, has been with her partner Martin for 10 years. Martin always said he didn't want to marry, viewing marriage as state control and patriarchal. Despite this, the author had dreamt of a big wedding since age seven but had given up on that idea. Then she watched Lena Dunham's 2025 Netflix series 'Too Much'.

The show features Jessica (Meg Stalter), a loud, chaotic American woman who makes poor decisions, and Felix (Will Sharpe), who adores her unconditionally. The author relates to this dynamic, seeing herself as the 'flappy, loud woman' and Martin as the devoted partner. The final episode shows a casual wedding on the steps of a London town hall, where Felix asks Jessica, 'So how long do you want to stay married for?' The author found this honest and romantic.

After watching the finale alone at her parents' house in London, she called Martin and proposed, arguing she loved him more than the characters love each other. Martin, who hadn't seen the show, was confused but agreed after she promised not to have the huge wedding she'd planned since childhood. 'We could do it in my parents' house, anywhere, and we didn't have to invite any guests,' she said.

Despite his talk of state-sponsored control and patriarchy, Martin is romantic and likely values lifelong commitment. He said yes. The couple will marry this September in the author's parents' kitchen, with no cake, white dress, or tiki torches. The author keeps trying to add more guests; Martin keeps crossing them out. But there will be a wedding, and the author thanks Lena Dunham.
