One of the cheapest ways to bring Dolby Atmos sound into your living room

Built-in TV speakers rarely deliver true Dolby Atmos immersion, but an affordable soundbar under $200 can offer a noticeable upgrade without a major investment.

Watching movies or live sports at home often falls short of the theater or stadium experience, largely because of weak built-in TV speakers. Dolby Atmos technology can add a sense of immersion to home viewing, and achieving it doesn't require expensive equipment.

Why TV speakers often disappoint

Modern televisions are built as thin as possible, which forces their speakers to be small and oriented downward or toward the back. As a result, sound is frequently absorbed by walls, media stands or floors before it reaches the viewer. The slim design simply leaves no room for the quality drivers or resonance chambers needed for dynamic audio. This removes the height and depth channels essential to spatial sound, leading to flat acoustics, muddy dialogue and weak bass — a problem especially noticeable when streaming music, since vocal clarity suffers. Even some high-end TVs with built-in Dolby Atmos support struggle to project sound properly into a room, lacking the specialized upward- or side-firing drivers needed to place audio cues correctly.

A soundbar as the fix

A Dolby Atmos-compatible soundbar typically costs far less than a full home theater system, though it comes with trade-offs. Many budget models rely on virtualized Dolby Atmos, using special audio processing to mimic overhead speakers rather than using genuine upward-firing drivers. While this virtual approach can't match true upward-firing speakers, it still represents a clear improvement over most built-in TV speakers. Brands such as Amazon, TCL and LG offer soundbars using this virtual processing, with some models priced under $200.

Before buying, it's worth confirming that the TV supports Dolby Atmos passthrough. If it doesn't, an affordable 4K streaming device such as the Roku Express 4K+ or the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K can solve the issue without a significant added cost.
