Leylah Fernandez reaches WTA Singapore quarter-finals with win over Alycia Parks

A hard-fought win

Canada's Leylah Fernandez defeated American Alycia Parks 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of the WTA Singapore Open, as reported by Tennisuptodate.com. The first set was tightly contested: after the score reached 30-all, Fernandez reeled off 14 consecutive points to lead 4-1, before Parks clawed back three games in a row to trail just 5-4. Fernandez, however, held serve to close out the set. In the second set the players traded breaks before Fernandez converted her third match point to seal the victory.

Notably, ahead of the match Last Word On Sports had predicted exactly this outcome, tipping Fernandez to win in straight sets — even though Parks held a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head heading into the contest. Fernandez now faces a tough test in the next round: world No.5 Mirra Andreeva.

A season of ups and downs

2026 has been a difficult year for Fernandez. She remains a top-35 player but has fallen well short of her best seasons. A strong autumn run, including a deep run in Singapore, could lift her back into the top 25 or even the top 20.

Andreeva is the tournament favourite after Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova withdrew. She beat Belarus's Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2, 6-2 in the second round and is chasing a fourth WTA title of the season following her triumph at Roland Garros.

Poland's Maja Chwalinska thrashed Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-0, 6-1 in just 59 minutes — the first time since her Roland Garros final run that she has won more than one singles match at the same tournament.

Defending champion Elise Mertens had an easier path to the last eight after Barbora Krejcikova withdrew before their scheduled match with a back injury. The day before, the Czech had saved two match points in a tense three-set win over Anna-Lena Friedsam and had needed a medical timeout during that contest.
