Latvian Football Federation won't rush to back candidate in FIFA presidential race

The Latvian Football Federation (LFF) will wait until the candidate registration period closes before deciding whom to support in the FIFA presidential election in spring 2027, secretary-general Artūrs Gaidels said on Latvian Television. He also dismissed concerns that LFF's rejection of Gianni Infantino's commercial proposal could affect FIFA funding.

Latvian Football Federation (LFF) is not ready to reveal which candidate it will support in the upcoming FIFA presidential election. The federation’s secretary-general, Artūrs Gaidels, said on Latvian Television on Tuesday that LFF will first wait until the end of the candidate registration period before choosing a favourite.

FIFA is set to elect its next president in the spring of 2027. Gaidels explained that the federation is in no hurry to make a decision, as it wants to see the full list of candidates. LFF will only take a stance after the official applicants have been confirmed.

The secretary-general also commented on the recent disagreement between European football federations and FIFA president Gianni Infantino over his global commercial proposal. LFF was among the federations that rejected the initiative. According to Gaidels, this opposition will not affect the financial support that FIFA had already promised. He said the previously pledged funding for Latvian football remains unchanged.

For now, LFF is keeping its options open. No preferred candidate has been named, and the federation is waiting for more information before making any commitments.
