Latvian Handball Federation condemns return of aggressor states to international handball

The Latvian Handball Federation (LHF) has expressed deep disappointment and outrage over the International Handball Federation's (IHF) decision to allow the handball federations of Russia and Belarus to return to international competitions. The IHF had imposed a ban in May 2022, barring teams, officials, and referees from these countries from participating in IHF events. However, this summer, following recommendations from the International Olympic Committee, the IHF reversed its stance.

The LHF argues that this move is morally unacceptable while Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine continues into its fifth year. The federation points out that military aggression has not ceased, Ukrainian territories remain occupied, and civilians suffer daily from the consequences of war. The LHF calls on the IHF to reconsider its decision and uphold the fundamental Olympic values of peace, respect, and human rights.

A particular concern for the LHF is the decision-making process, which occurred without consulting national federations or listening to the Ukrainian Handball Federation's opinion. The LHF believes that reintegration of Russia and Belarus into international handball should only be possible after the war ends, Russian troops withdraw from Ukraine, and Ukraine's 1991 borders are restored.

The LHF fully stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian Handball Federation and the Ukrainian people, commending their courage and resilience in developing sports amid the war. The federation will continue to advocate for sport based on fair competition and respect for international law.
