Lidl supermarkets in Latvia sell surprise bags of fruit and vegetables for two euros, and shoppers on the social platform Threads are swapping finds and asking when and where the bags can be bought. According to residents, the bags are in such demand that they are often snapped up within minutes.

What shoppers have found

One user wrote that her bag this time contained a passion fruit and asked others what interesting things they had come across. Olga posted her own purchase, made a couple of days earlier. Evija said she finally got a bag after a long while, containing grapes, potatoes, nectarines, celery, bananas, Brussels sprouts and carrots. Ieva noted that the produce in these bags is always in very good condition.

Not everyone has been so lucky. Sanita wrote that she has never managed to spot such a bag, while Alīna wanted to know whether there is a set time when they are put out. She said she often learns about them only while standing in the checkout queue, when other shoppers suddenly have bags in their hands. Olga thinks similar offers could be introduced by other retail chains, such as Rimi and Maxima.

What the company says

Lidl Latvija has previously explained that the bags, weighing about three kilograms, are available in all of the chain's stores. They contain produce with minor visual defects that is still of good quality and safe to eat.

Availability depends on the situation in each individual store, so the bags are not put out at the same time everywhere. In one store they may be found in the morning, afternoon and evening, while in another only in the afternoon.
